Progressive practice
Build the form, then make it believable.
Move through four focused stages. Each exercise gives you one idea to test, one action to complete, and a clear next step.

Stage one / unlocked
Form and volume
Turn flat marks into objects with weight. Start with the primitive forms that support almost every character, prop, and environment.
Exercise A: Primitive inventory
Draw a cube, sphere, and cylinder from three angles. Add a centerline to each one so the volume remains clear when it turns.
Exercise B: Combine the forms
Build a simple object from at least two primitives. Keep the overlaps visible and check that the parts share the same scale.
Complete both studies before moving to perspective.
Stage two / locked
Perspective and space
Use horizon lines and vanishing points to place your forms inside a believable world.
The Cube Challenge is a useful warm-up for this stage.

Shadow
Use a clear light source to describe core shadows, form shadows, and cast shadows without flattening the object.
Find the turning point where the form faces away from the light.
Project the object’s shadow across the receiving surface.
Keep highlight, half-tone, and shadow consistent with one direction.
Identify the light source before you shade.
Stage four / locked
Depth
Combine scale, overlap, atmospheric perspective, and parallax to make a 2D scene feel deep and spatial.
Make distant objects smaller while keeping their structure believable.
Use foreground shapes to hide and reveal space between layers.
Reduce contrast and detail as forms move farther into the scene.
Finish with the Self-Check to review all four principles.
